Origin underpins deforestation due diligence
Ensure compliance with deforestation legislation through forensic origin verification.
We provide science-based evidence to verify your raw material origins align with sustainable sources not associated with deforestation.
Protect your business from deforestation penalties with forensic verification that validates your supply chain data against the physical truth.
EU Deforestation Regulation compliance
The EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) prohibits products sourced from deforested land from being traded in the European Union.
No compliance means no market access. Knowing the true origin of the raw materials you use is essential.
Proactive compliance is the best way for businesses to avoid costly penalties and reputational damage.
Leather, coffee & timber in the spotlight
Many commodities are covered by deforestation legislation. Businesses in the leather, timber, cattle, and coffee sectors (among others) are now in the spotlight.
Leading fashion houses risk using hides from cattle raised on deforested land for their leather products.
At least 15-30% of the global timber trade is illegal, according to the World Bank and INTERPOL.
As regulatory enforcement tightens, businesses in these sectors will find their operations more scrutinized than ever.
Scientifically geolocate your raw materials
Geolocation of raw materials is a cornerstone of compliance. Oritain’s origin verification methodology can be applied across a range of geographic scales, and in some cases, can verify product origin to individual tracts of land.
This process provides the essential "ground truth" that links physical goods to their claimed geolocation.
We partner with World Forest ID (WFID) to scientifically verify the origin of timber, and are the sole provider of timber testing services for the UK government.
Why traditional EUDR compliance methods are no longer enough
Most EUDR compliance solutions rely on supplier honesty. But if the input data is falsified, the digital record is worthless. This creates a critical verification gap where companies are liable for the physical reality of their goods, regardless of their digital "green light".
Under EUDR requirements, the burden of proof rests on the operator. Relying solely on supplier self-declarations creates a significant liability.
Documents can be easily forged to mask non-compliant goods, creating a document fraud risk that administrative tools cannot detect.
EUDR deforestation monitoring via satellite verifies that a claimed plot of land is legal, but cannot prove your product actually grew there.
This creates the potential for "geo-spoofing," where clean coordinates are used to launder deforested goods.
The financial risks of EUDR penalties begin from 4% of annual EU turnover. Beyond fines, authorities can confiscate revenues and exclude brands from markets.
Without physical product verification, your balance sheet is exposed to the hidden risks in your supply chain.

FAQs
The EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) seeks to address the loss of the planet’s forests by prohibiting the import into or exporting out of the EU products which are associated with deforestation. Businesses trading in the EU must carry out sufficient due diligence to determine whether they are deforestation-free or risk fines of at least 4% of their EU turnover and loss of market access.
For more information, read our EU Deforestation Regulation overview.
The EUDR applies to companies in the industries of palm oil, cattle (beef and leather), timber, coffee, cocoa, rubber, and soy, as well as derivative products including chocolate and furniture.
The EUDR obliges businesses to precisely geolocate the specific plot of land involved in the production or farming of their commodities. Forensic scientific testing can be used as a product-based verification that the physical product in a shipment genuinely originates from the declared origin.
By first establishing a proprietary reference baseline for a specific sourcing location, Oritain can compare a product’s Origin Fingerprint to that baseline and scientifically verify whether the product aligns with its claimed geolocation. Through this forensic approach, Oritain provides independent third-party verification of product origin for a range of commodities covered by deforestation legislation.
Forensic verification can be used to validate smallholder origins, for example coffee growers or cattle ranchers, without requiring them to purchase sophisticated digital mapping tools. Through a product-based testing program that only requires a small amount of sample, assurance of origin can be provided, and smallholder farmers protected, without undue effort or investment.
Shipment-level traceability is concerned with tracking a journey, while scientific origin verification is used to authenticate sourcing claims. Traceability monitors the movement of a batch through the supply chain, relying on digital tags, barcodes, and shipping manifests. In contrast, scientific origin verification interrogates the physical properties of the batch itself by analyzing product samples to confirm or refute the claims made in the shipment’s documentation.
Investing in scientific testing is a critical strategic move for complying with the EUDR, which carries severe penalties for non-compliance, including fines of at least 4% of annual EU turnover, confiscation of goods, and temporary bans from public procurement.
By verifying a product's geographic origin through its chemical signature, businesses can drastically reduce the long-term administrative burden of chasing paper trails across complex supply chains. This science-based assurance also ensures high integrity data for the mandatory due diligence statements required by regulators.
