FAQs

Find out what the Oritain platform is, how forensic origin verification compares to other traceability tools, and more.

Traceability software is the digital infrastructure for mapping and verifying product journeys from sourcing origin through manufacturing and distribution to the end consumer. By integrating data from throughout supply chains, traceability software provides transparency which allows businesses to authenticate claims, ensure regulatory compliance, and mitigate supply chain risk.

Supply chain traceability is a regulatory requirement for businesses to provide proof of ethical sourcing. For example, the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act (UFLPA) presumes that all goods from China’s Xinjiang region are made with forced labor.

The accuracy of supply chain traceability must be validated through robust, reliable verification. Without accurate supply chain traceability to prove a product's clean origin, shipments face immediate detention or seizure at the border.

Under the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), businesses must precisely geolocate the plots of land where commodities like timber, leather, coffee, cocoa, and rubber are produced to verify they haven't contributed to deforestation. Traceability software is necessary to maintain market access and avoid non-compliance penalties.

Oritain’s process is simple, powerful, and scientifically led. We start by collecting a small sample of the product from within the supply chain (raw, part processed or finished). Our scientists then analyze its isotopic and elemental composition using advanced forensic techniques.

Our data experts then apply Oritain’s proprietary methodology to scientifically test the validity of the origin claim against a unique Origin Fingerprint in our global database. No additives or modifications are involved in the process – just science, tested at multiple stages of production.

The results are delivered through our secure, ISO27001-certified client portal, providing clear, actionable insights that empower responsible decision-making across the supply chain.

Forensic origin verification applies scientific principles, similar to those used in forensic investigations, to evaluate whether a product, ingredient, or raw material is consistent with a claimed geographic origin. This approach characterizes a material’s natural “fingerprint” and assesses if the observed chemical profile supports or contradicts a specific hypothesis related to origin.

Our scientific foundation is built on a team of researchers with over 40 years of combined experience in forensic origin verification, spanning disciplines such as analytical chemistry, stable isotope geochemistry, and data science.

Unlike traditional traceability methods that follow documentation or digital proxies, Oritain analyzes the product itself, using forensic science to verify its origin. While paper and digital trails can offer some transparency, they remain vulnerable to manipulation.

In contrast, Oritain’s scientific approach tests the product itself to verify its inherent authenticity, using a naturally occurring Origin Fingerprint that is highly resistant to being forged or altered.

Traceability tracks the documented path of materials through a supply chain – who handled what, when, and where. Origin verification scientifically authenticates that material claim by testing the product itself. Traceability tells you what the paperwork says; origin verification tells you whether the paperwork is accurate. Both serve important functions, and the most robust programs use them together.

Digital supply chain mapping tells you what suppliers claim happened, while forensic testing verifies that the sourcing origin information supplied is accurate. Mapping uses software and blockchain to record transactions between suppliers, but it remains vulnerable to "garbage in, garbage out" if a participant uploads falsified data.

In contrast, forensic testing analyzes the product's natural chemical signature to provide evidence of its geographic origin. That’s why physical product testing is a necessary complement to software-based traceability for achieving defensible forced labor compliance.

Digital tracking manages the flow of data to monitor a product's movement through a supply chain; physical verification uses methods like forensic testing to evaluate the authenticity of the product’s origin claims through empirical evidence.

While digital tracking tells you where a product is in its supply chain journey, physical verification confirms that the product is what it is claimed to be.

The Return on Investment (ROI) for traceability solutions is calculated by weighing the upfront cost of the technology against the mitigation of business costs, penalties and brand damage.

By establishing an ongoing origin verification program, businesses can offset the exposure to revenue loss from shipment detentions, hefty financial penalties for regulatory non-compliance, and the long-term reputational damage that follows public or media scandals. The ROI is achieved through maintaining uninterrupted market access and protecting brand equity.
