Verifying Origin

Traceable ocean-farmed New Zealand King Salmon.

Our scientific traceability tracks a specific product back to the source rather than relying on packaging or barcodes. We have created an 'Origin Fingerprint' for Big Glory Bay King Salmon that exists due to the intrinsic chemical properties in the environment that the seafood is grown in.

Sanford has partnered with Oritain to develop a robust solution to verify the origin of its Big Glory Bay ocean-farmed fresh King Salmon.

With this information, Sanford can test any of these products from its farms in Big Glory Bay, Stewart Island, through to the plates of its customers to verify where they come from.

With consumers increasingly demanding origin information from suppliers, Sanford has taken a great step to ensure its customers are fully aware of the origin of their Big Glory Bay products, adding assurance and transparency.

With pristine water quality and cold currents, Big Glory Bay is the ideal place to raise seafood. The average water temperature is 14°C, meaning seafood grows more slowly here–giving it time to develop distinctive flavours.

Salmon farming first began in this area in 1983, when it was still a relatively new concept worldwide. It took time, experimentation, and hard work for the first farm to succeed. But by the late 1980s, the aquaculture industry was thriving here, and making a real difference to the local community.

Sanford, New Zealand's largest Seafood Company with a history spanning over 150 years, took the reins of the salmon farms in 1993. With the Sanford brand comes a deep commitment to sustainability in everything it does. Sanford treats its seafood with the respect it deserves, and will continue to take care of it for future generations to enjoy.

Raw Salmon With Ingredients

Traceability like no other.

Oritain’s unique methodology applies forensic science and data to detect naturally occurring elements in a product or raw material. Soil composition, climate, altitude and other environmental factors all reveal the details of a product’s origin - which we call an Origin Fingerprint.

Once we’ve created an Origin Fingerprint, it can be used to audit our clients’ products at any point in the supply chain - to clearly differentiate the legitimate from the fraudulent.
