Grant comes from a finance background after spending 11 years as a currency derivative trader and risk manager in London, New York and the Far East working for well known institutions as Credit Suisse and Citibank.
In 2001 Grant moved back to New Zealand to pursue a career in farming. As a dedicated farmer Grant first saw the value that Oritain can provide by helping protect the investment that farmers make in producing top quality products.
Rupert has joined Oritain after holding senior positions in Financial Institutions in the City of London, most recently as CEO of TFS London, a leading global financial brokerage firm. Rupert’s expertise in risk management assists our customers to pro-actively manage the risks of food fraud. Rupert is based in the London office where he leads the UK team.
Todd has 12 years of sales and marketing experience after joining Oritain from Lion Nathan. His experience in Lion across 8 years provides Todd with a strong background in FMCG marketing and brand management. He has held roles managing some of Australasia’s largest brands including Steinlager and Dare Iced Coffee. Key achievements in his tenure at Lion include management of the multi award winning ‘white can’ campaign for Steinlager’s leverage of the All Blacks successful Rugby World Cup campaign in 2011. Todd has an agriculture background having grown up on a sheep, deer and beef farm in Clinton, South Otago.
Chris is originally from England and now resides in Dunedin. He has a wealth of experience in sales and business strategy, working for companies like Procter & Gamble and Reckitt Benckiser both in the UK and NZ. He has led large multi-functional sales teams in the past and brings lots of commercial experience to Oritain.
Outside of work Chris loves spending time with his family and being at the beach, whether this is playing with his 2 young children or surfing at the stunning St Clair beach where he lives.
With 20 years experience in accounting and finance, Ben is well suited to the newly created role of CFO. He has worked with a range of businesses from the very large (KPMG, Shell, Deakin University) to the very small across multiple industries. He enjoys helping non-accountants understand finance concepts and providing business insights through data analysis. Challenging the status quo and asking “why?” are important parts of Ben’s role. Having recently moved from Australia, Ben is excited to be a part of the Oritain journey and working across the business to realise our vision.
Kiri has a background in Analytical Chemistry and Forensic Science including statistics. Kiri’s role at Oritain involves driving innovation and development to keep Oritain at the cutting edge of food origin science. Kiri’s PhD research looked at the analysis of honey for origin authentication. During this time he was a Teaching Fellow at the University of Otago in forensic science. Kiri has been a technical expert for the International Atomic Energy Agency in Nuclear Techniques for food authentication. During this time Kiri contributed to the text ‘New Analytical techniques in Food Authentication’ by Brereton. Kiri enjoys tramping and the outdoors and is also an instructor in Shukokai Karate.
PhD Physical Chemistry
Sam completed a PhD in chemistry at the University of Otago in 2012. Following on from his academic studies, Sam entered the commercial environment as an Account manager in the Otago/Southland area for ThermoFisher Scientific.
Sam joined Oritain in a business development roll and now leads delivery of the Oritain service to its many customers. Sam enjoys the commercial challenge of incorporating science into business solutions.
Sam has grown up in the Otago area and considers Dunedin home. He enjoys spending time with his family, outdoor activities and when he finds time likes to restore cars.
B.Sc Hons Chemistry
Shay grew up in Central Otago and moved to Dunedin to study chemistry at Otago University. Since completing her honours degree in 2011, Shay been working as a Laboratory Technician.
Outside of work she enjoys running, cycling, all things outdoors, and playing guitar.
Shay’s key responsibility at Oritain is to prepare the many sample types we have for analytical analysis.
B.Sc Physiology and Zoology, Grad.Dip Microbiology
Her role at Oritain is to build close relationships with our clients to better understand their business needs.
She does this by ensuring we meet the agreed contracted deliverables for the client in the times specified. Increasing the breadth of services that Oritain provides for our client’s business. Maximises value for the client. And by the sharing of relevant industry information.
She has the overarching perspective of her clients, and their industry and how Oritain can help to add value for them.
Libby comes from a farming background, enjoys travel sports and catching up with friends.
Julie has a background in banking in both New Zealand and Australia. Julie is responsible for supporting the team with the office administration and to make sure this runs smoothly and effortlessly.
B.Sc Chemistry and Physiology, M.Sc Chemistry
Josh has a background in Analytical Chemistry with his MSc research focusing on measuring various chemical parameters in saffron, mainly for the purposes of origin authentication. Josh’s role at Oritain includes sample preparation, data analysis, interpretation and reporting, development and design of traceability solutions and supporting the senior scientists. Josh originates from Auckland and moved to Dunedin to study at the University of Otago. His main interests include a wide range of sports and outdoor activities and socializing.
Masa is a lab tech here at Oritain, he works tirelessly in the lab to make sure that sample operations are running to schedule.
Masa is originally from Japan, and moved to New Zealand because of the coveted Kiwi lifestyle. Masa studied Chemistry at Otago University.
Masa and his wife are kept busy by their two young boys playing football in the weekends.
Kelly joins us as a Research and Development statistician in the Research and Development department, helping Kiri and the wider science team develop new methods and further sharpen the Oritain capabilities.
Kelly is originally from Shanghai and before Oritain, Kelly was studying Statistics at Auckland University.
BSc in Environmental Science, PhD in Chemical Oceanography
Kate has a background in earth systems sciences and biochemical modelling. She completed her undergraduate studies in her home state of North Carolina at UNC-Chapel Hill. After studying abroad at the University of Otago, she later returned there to complete her PhD at the Department of Chemistry. She joined Oritain after completing a post-doctoral research stint at the University of Tasmania.
Aside from research, Kate has also worked in a variety of positions ranging from SCUBA diver, environmental engineer for a dewatering company, and casual worker for her inlaws’ sheep and cattle farm.
Certificate in Business Administration & Computing.
Kate has come from a mining background, born in Dunedin and has lived here her whole life.
In her spare time she enjoys spending time with family, running, diving and fishing.
LLB, BCom in Strategy and Entrepreneurship
Stew recently joined the Oritain team, having just completed a double degree in Law and Commerce majoring in Strategy and Entrepreneurship at the University of Canterbury. He has a passion for business strategy and development and will be joining the Oritain team as an Account Manager.
He grew up on a dairy farm near Methven in the Canterbury region and in his spare time loves getting outdoors playing rugby, skiing, fishing and diving.
Originally from Australia, Nick has been in New Zealand for 11 years. Nick began his career with the Hill Laboratories in Hamilton occupying a number of roles from Technician through to Manager of Procurement and Facilities. Having worked in analytical laboratories for almost a decade, Nick has gained valuable experience and enjoyed building relationships with customers and suppliers.
Nick loves to scuba dive and travel; as happy as he is with his move to sunny Dunedin he’s even happier to have landed a job that allows him to leave it fairly frequently to collect our clients samples from the field.
Originally from Ukraine, Olya came to New Zealand in 2011.
Recently she finished her PhD in Marine Science at the University of Otago in Dunedin and was welcomed as a new team member at Oritain. She is excited about a chance to apply her scientific skills for improving the food security around the world. In her free time she enjoys surfing, travelling and spending time with her friends.
Coming from a background in Event Management, Erin has recently moved from Melbourne to Dunedin with her Kiwi partner. Erin has been lucky enough to have worked in and travelled to many places around the globe, and loves nothing more than chucking a backpack on her back and heading into the unknown.
Her role at Oritain as a Sample Procurement Technician, which requires Erin to travel all over the place collecting Samples – is a natural fit.
In her down time, Erin studies Interior design and enjoys spending time at the beach, socialising and singing along to the radio loudly enough to annoy almost everyone.
BCOM Marketing and Economics
John has held senior roles in several NZ and Multinational organisations over the past 20 years, including Cerebos Pacific, Air NZ Group, Southern Fresh Milk, Venture Southland and Aotearoa Seafood’s. John brings significant experience in international food and tourism sales and marketing to Oritain and his time in the Aquaculture, Dairy and FMCG food export sectors, specifically, will be of value to many of Oritain’s partners. Born and bred in rural Southland John looks forward to being part of a successful Southern born company that adds value to key sectors of NZ’s economy.
A Dunedin native, Murray has a diverse work history involving mining, brewing and librarianship and holds qualifications in biotechnology and food science. Murray is excited by the prospect of working for a local business with what he personally believes to have massive potential.
He is passionate about food and drink, which motivates his free time pursuits of travel, cooking and brewing
After three years working as a legal assistant in top-tier international law firms, Sally traded the corporate life for freelance writing last year and left Australia to pursue her passion for creative industries. Having joined Oritain’s team of London antipodeans shortly thereafter, Sally brings to the table a wealth of administrative experience, expertise in creative, technical and academic writing and a keen eye for professional design.
Sally also assists the Directors with managing the London office’s human resources, operations and accounts and provides administrative support to the team. Sally spends her weekends travelling, hiking, writing and exploring London’s parks on foot.
After 30 years in financial broking and restaurant ownership in London, Ian brings to Oritain his extensive network of connections with the Master chefs and Senior alumni in the Food and Financial sectors. When not with his four daughters, as an Ex Harlequin he may be found at the their ground or flyfishing in Hampshire and Scotland.
Ben has recently joined the UK office after graduating with a BA in Business and Management with first class honours from the Henley Business School. Having studied an array of subjects from money markets and foreign exchange to international finance and business strategy, Ben is looking to develop the breadth of Oritain’s accounts whilst also having a client-focused role.
Ben is a keen sportsman having rowed crew for Reading University Boat Club, but now enjoys going to the gym, playing golf and skiing.
Miguel has a background in Food Safety and Business Management. He has worked for several companies in the United Kingdom and Spain, helping them to develop new commercial strategies and concepts, using his knowledge of the food industry and the grocery markets.
He has joined the business development team at Oritain to engage with new clients in Europe.
Mathew takes care of Oritain’s marketing initiatives both internally and externally with customers. Mathew’s background is in sales as a previous timber and building supplies merchant and also in telemarketing sales. After completing a BA in Media and Marketing at Victoria University of Wellington, he joined the team at Oritain in 2015.
Outside of work, Mathew is active in the music scene playing drums in a band and also takes part in a slew of sports including being a provincial champ while representing Hawkes Bay in Rowing and playing Premier Grade Basket Ball and Rugby.
B.Sc Mathematics, B.Sc Hons Statistics
Originally from Nelson, Georgia moved to Dunedin to study mathematics and statistics at the University of Otago. In 2016, she completed a B.Sc Hons in statistics where she investigated new approaches to dimension reduction and classification methods to apply to Oritain datasets.
Georgia joins Kiri and Kelly in the Research & Development team to help introduce new statistical methods and extend Oritain’s capabilities.
Outside of work she enjoys swimming, cycling, travelling and spending time with family and friends.
With a Bachelor in Design Communication (Distinction), a love for everything creative and a passion for working with people, the hybrid role of Account Manager and Design suits Victoria very well indeed. She holds strong skills in brand development, print design, user-centred (UX) design, front end web design, project management and client liaison.
Observant and adaptable; Victoria is a team player, constantly seeking to develop hers and others’ capabilities. She is happiest when applying her creativity, exploring new ideas and working alongside passionate people to make a difference. We think she’ll fit right in.
Originally from France, Ben joins the Oritain team in the Dunedin office. Having worked for Oritain 3 years ago he is now back apart of a larger team. Outside of work Ben enjoys playing Ice hockey ans represents Dunedin in the Dunedin Thunder team.
As General Secretary of the Premier League, Nic was responsible for growing and protecting the Premier League brand in a changing media landscape and under his stewardship, underwent a sustained period of exceptional growth, cementing it as the world’s most pre-eminent football league.
Nic also was the first Chief Executive for British Horseracing Authority (BHA), and more recently filled the challenging role of General Secretary of the UK Premier Football League.
Valery is currently Global Head of STS International Trading.
Valery joined Credit Suisse in Mach 2010 as a Managing Director and Head of Fixed Income department with responsibility to develop Fixed income business in Russia and CIS. He was promoted to be a Head of Emerging Markets Trading in CEEMEA regions and at the same time a head of Global markets in Russia for Credit Suisse.
Valery moved into finance from academia background. He completed Ph.D program at University of Maryland College Park. Before he received his Masters Degree in Mathematics from Kharkov State University where he studied with Dr. V. Drinfield (receiver of 1990 Filds medal).
Russell has been involved with Oritain since its formation and has recently joined the Board. Russell has a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Otago and specialises in utilising geochemical tracers to establish linkages and pathways in various natural systems. His research over the last 27 years includes tracing water masses around the Antarctic, forensic case-work and verifying the origin and authenticity of foodstuffs. Russell is a Professor of Chemistry at Otago University but is currently on leave while working for the UN in the joint FAO/IAEA Food and Environmental Protection Laboratory, Vienna.
Richard is Professor of Statistics at University of Otago and Chairs the board of the Hopkins Farming Group Ltd. Richard completed a degree in Zoology at Massey University and began his career as a Fish and Game officer before spending time overseas. He earned his PhD in Statistics at Massey University after returning to NZ in 1992. Following a stint as a biometrician at Landcare Research, Richard has been a University academic since 1998. He holds the Chair in Statistics at the University of Otago, and is currently Head of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.
Stu has a wealth of governance experience from a wide range of companies including Fonterra and GlobalHort (a New Zealand owned Kiwifruit producer in China). Stu chairs the Oritain Audit and Risk sub-committee.
Greg comes from a dairy background in the Waikato and has more recently moved to Otago where, along with his wife Kelly, they run a large scale dairy operation.
In 2012 Greg was elected as a Fonterra Shareholder Councillor, along with being a participant in the Kellogg’s Rural Leadership Program and the Fonterra Governance Development Program.
John is well known in the New Zealand agricultural sector and was one of the founders of the successful livestock firm Rural Livestock (of which John is the Chair of the Board), other governance roles include being a Director of AG Foley Limited and Southern Wide Realty.
